My 10 Do's & Don'ts When Planning A Trip To Italy's Amalfi Coast

As I plan trips for lucky clients headed to the Amalfi Coast this summer, I wanted to share 10 “do’s and don’ts” with you that I’ve learned from traveling to Italy’s coastal region over the years. Hopefully, you find these tips helpful as you make your summer travel plans!
1.Do take a boat out by yourself. While boat tours are a wonderful way to become familiar with the coast line, the best caves, waterfalls and beach clubs are best discovered when you’re behind the wheel.

2. Do plan on flying into either Rome or Naples. Often times, Rome flight schedules are more convenient to/from the US, while Naples is the preferred airport if you’re making connections from other European destinations. From Rome or Naples, a private transfer is recommended. Or, for travelers on a budget flying into Rome, take the train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale and arrange a private transfer to your accommodations from there.

3. Don’t move around too much. I suggest calling just one town home per week – like Positano – and taking day trips from there! I could spend a month in Positano alone savoring la dolce vita!

4. Do book your villa rentals early as they book up FAST. Also know that villa rentals are Saturday to Saturday only – no exceptions.

5. Don’t fill your itinerary up too much! Leave a few days wide open to peruse town and relax by the pool.

6. If you’ve already visited the mainland towns, do consider Sicily, Sardinia orĀ Sikelia on the Italian island of Pantelleria.

7. Don’t venture to the Amalfi Coast before May as many businesses and hotels don’t open back up for the season until then. My favorite time to be on the coast is in late June and early July when you can really get out and enjoy the water and when the towns feel alive!

8. For less mobile travelers, do some research to understand exactly where your accommodations are, how many staircases are required to get down to the beach and if your hotel has an elevator or not.

9. Do consider the island of Ischia in addition to Capri. As Capri’s lesser-known neighbor, Ischia has plenty of beautiful beaches, hiking trails, local eats and a few luxury accommodation options to discover.

10. And lastly, do as the Italians do! Sip aperol spritzes, give into long lunches and dinners, taste the local produce like zucchini blossoms and Amalfi lemons, and end every meal with limoncello!
