Bali | Ubud + Seminyak

My exposure to Bali before this past week was limited to scenes from Eat. Pray. Love  and Bridget Jones Diary. Clearly I let that influence how I planned the trip as we had 3 zen-filled days in the cultural center of Ubud and 3 lazy beach bum days in the resort town of Seminyak… that way I could play out my inner Elizabeth Gilbert and Bridget Jones.
A few tidbits I learned about Bali:

  • Bali is one of Indonesia’s ~18,000 islands.
  • Over 50% of the Balinese live on just ~20% of Bali’s land. While there are a lot of pristine places to explore, it can take an hour by car to go just 3 miles in the inhabited areas.
  • Bali is ~85% Hindu which is apparent on every street littered with flower offerings and burning incense. Most homes you pass also have their own personal family temples.
  • Bali is home to the world’s most expensive coffee – Kopi Luwak. The coffee is produced when a civet cat eats and excretes local coffee berries. Yes, I did try the ‘poop’ coffee at Bali Pulina, and yes, it honestly was delicious. Don’t worry – the beans are sterilized through a drying and slow-roasting process before ever reaching your cup.

Here are a few photos from our 6 days in Ubud and Seminyak.
